Abstract

Objectives. To identify, analyze and getting to know the current situation of the humanization of nursing care in critical adult patient units and the benefits for the patient and their family.

Method. A review of the scientific literature of the last 5 years (2012-2017) was carried out in the PUBMED, CUIDEN, LILACS, Google academic and SciELO databases and a thematic analysis of the content of the selected articles

Results. A total of 15 publications were identified that matched the search criterion. After analyzing it, we identified that there is currently a guide for the humanization of intensive care that is already being implemented in some hospitals, and the benefits provided to the patient and family by the release of visiting schedules, care from an integral perspective, improving the environment and spaces of the ICU and improving communication skills both with the patient and with the family. It has also been identified that although the benefits of these measures are evident, there are still nurses who do not carry them out.

Conclusion. The humanization of intensive care provides multiple benefits to both, patient and his family. In 2015, a committee developed a guide to establish this type of caring in critical care units but hasn't been yet established in all hospitals and although nurses are increasingly aware of the need to establish such care, still a long way to go.
