Abstract

Introduction. The pneumotropic pressure of the endotracheal tube, unlike other units, is not routinely controlled in the surgical setting. Considering a safe range between 20-30 cmH2O, infra or cuff overpressure can have serious consequences for the patient, even in short-term intubations. The method of inflation by tactile estimation may not be the most appropriate to achieve a correct pressure.

Objective. Determine if the inflation method by tactile estimation is reliable for a correct control of the pneumatic pressure.

Method. A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out in which it was assessed if the inflation of the pneumotoping is performed correctly by digit-palpation. A sample of 88 patients undergoing general anesthesia was selected at the Fundación Alcorcón University Hospital. The pressure was controlled with a calibrated manometer, comparing it with the manual method and analyzing its reliability in different professional groups.

Scientific relevance. Inadequate cuff pressure seems to be related to the occurrence of complications such as sore throat, dysphonia, etc.
