Abstract

Introduction and objective. The relationship between physical exercise and pregnancy has evolved to establish itself as a basic health recommendation, given the amount of benefits that its practice supposes, especially its influence on gestational diabetes.

The westernization of current societies has increased the risk factors for the appearance of gestational diabetes and the associated maternal-fetal consequences. The objective of this bibliographic review is to present the main variables related to gestational diabetes and to propose a nursing health intervention on pregnant women.

Methodology. Bibliographic search focused on the relationship between “physical exercise”, “gestational diabetes”, “pregnancy”. It’s been carried out in the PubMed, Scielo, Cochrane, Cinalh, Dialnet, CISNE Catalog and Enferteca databases, with a total selection of 25 articles.

Conclusions. Currently, the most effective interventions for the prevention of gestational diabetes in pregnant women combine diet and physical exercise. However, certain types of physical exercise can prevent the development of gestational diabetes and associated risk factors. It’s considered necessary to carry out a greater number of heterogeneous interventions to support results. The monofactorial health intervention approach, focused on the practice of physical exercise in pregnant women, could help in the prevention of this pathology.
