Abstract

Introduction. Arterial cannulation is a frequent and painful technique carried out in special units. There are two methods to carry it out: the conventional method (anatomic reference) and the ultrasound-guided technique (direct visualization of the artery).

Objectives. To compare both techniques regarding the pain of their execution and other variables such as gender.

Materials and methods. An observational prospective study is conducted, where 107 patients with a cannulated peripheral artery are analized. Different variables liable to have an influence in the perception of pain are studied. Language R is used for the statistical analysis.

Results. The conventional technique was the most frequently used. 62 patients were men (57.96%). 63 was the average age. Anaesthetics were used in 16.8% of cases. Half of the cannulations required more than one attempt (mostly for women).

Conclusions. The presence of pain and its intensity are related to the number of attempts required to achieve the arterial cannulation, but not to the chosen technique. Being conscious and a high number of attempts (women require more) are linked to pain. Age does not determine its presence.
