Abstract

During pregnancy, the body undergoes many changes that mainly affect the musculoskeletal system, and thus, exercise routines should be modified. Training these structures of the body requires great effort, and injury is a risk if exercises are performed on dry land during pregnancy; therefore, aquatic exercise is ideal.

An intervention, complementary to traditional maternal education and consisting of a series of aquatic exercises, was developed. An intervention study without random allocation was designed, with 145 subjects in the intervention group and 145 in the control group.

Three independent variables, including the type of delivery, the use of epidural analgesia and perineal trauma, were analysed using the statistical program SPSS. In addition, age, parity and the type of pregnancy (single or multiple) were considered as dependent variables. It should be noted that the rate of eutocic deliveries was 76.55% in the intervention group compared to 61.38% in the control group, and the rate of caesarean deliveries was 13.79% in the intervention group compared to 28.28% in the control group.

With the implementation of the aquatic exercise programme, it was possible to reduce the rate of caesarean deliveries and achieve compliance with WHO standars.
