Abstract

Introduction. The cannulation of a peripheral venous access is one of the most used techniques in the healthcare system. Recently, midline catheters are used. Due to their recent use, the aim of this article is to describe its utilization experience during 2021.

Methods. The study was conducted as a prospective descriptive type, comprising all patients who had a Midline catheter cannulated in the HUFA in the year 2021. The variables studied were recorded in the Excel spreadsheet program. Data analysis was developed using the statistical analysis software IBM SPSS.

Results. A total of 672 Midline peripheral venous catheters were analyzed. The average number of days the catheter remained inserted in the patient was 11.29 (S.D. 9.78). The 83.3 % (559) of the catheters were cannulated due to depletion of the patient's venous supply. The 82 % (547) showed a good evolution during their use. In 37 % (247) of the cases, the hospital care protocol was fulfilled. The average number of days these catheters were working was 9.07 (S.D. 8.23). No associated complications were found in 62.5 % (417) of the cases.

Conclusions. Although most of the catheters showed a good evolution, 37.5 % of them developed some kind of complication, being more frequent the mechanics. A better monitoring of their evolution in the patient's electronic medical record and an optimal application of the established protocol in their management could have an impact on the improvement of their functionality, as shown in some studies. Training is key to avoid complications.
