Abstract

Introduction. The “burnout syndrome" is determined by mental and physical exhaustion that occurs in individuals who, in one way or another, need to interact with people in their work. In this study, nurses are chosen so to be compared, as they are a group that is in direct contact with people. Nurses frequently face excessive demands from patients. The results of nurses from public and private institutions will be compared.

Aim. Relate the burnout syndrome to the variable of working in a public or private setting.

Specific aims. Study if the mental load is higher in nurses working in private institutions. Determine if the psychosocial risks are higher in private nurses.

Results. The average score obtained in each scale of the MBI test was compared by the group of nurses of the public and private companies, obtaining results in which in the scale of emotional exhaustion and in depersonalization the scores have been higher for the nurses belonging to the company privates. However, there are no differences in personal fulfillment between the public and private companies. We can not talk about burnout syndrom, although symptomatology is appreciated.

Conclusions. Excessive complaints from patients, physicians, along with mental and physical exhaustion, result in higher values on the MBI questionnaire. The frustration dissatisfaction is greatest among nurses working in private institutions. The psychosocial risks are higher in nurses working in private centers. The results show the importance of developing intervention strategies to reduce the feelings of depersonalization, emotional exhaustion and personal fulfillment in the nursing community.
