Analysis of the emotional impact, sexual health, and quality of life in women undergoing assisted human reproduction techniques

Abstract:: The increase in the number of women undergoing assisted human reproduction techniques has heightened interest and studies on the impact on various aspects of patients' lives, as well as the needs that arise as a consequence of the experience.
Fertility problems affect various aspects of a person's life, such as sexual sphere, psychological well-being, social and work life, and interpersonal relationships, among others.
Objective: To analyze the impact of assisted reproductive techniques on the sexual and emotional health of women undergoing these techniques and to describe the various variables that may influence this impact.
Methods: Cross-sectional study with a sample of 271 women undergoing assisted reproductive techniques at the Hospital Universitario La Paz in Madrid.
Results: 74.9% (n=203) exhibited alterations in some sexual spheres, correlating with the patient's age, origin, duration of treatment, and previous attempts. Anxiety increased to 22.4% during treatment, being higher in vitro treatments compared to artificial inseminations, in women with endometriosis, and in patients with previous failed attempts.
Conclusions: Assisted reproductive treatments cause alterations in the affective-sexual sphere of patients, making it important to implement interventions to prevent and/or detect negative effects.
