Abstract

The popularity and consumption of energy drinks continue to increase among adolescents despite growing concerns about their negative health effects. Additionally, the intensive use of the Internet and changes in nutritional status represent health problems that are alarming to society.

The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between the consumption of energy drinks, the use of social networks, and the nutritional status of adolescents, as well as their association with sociodemographic characteristics.

A cross-sectional study was conducted, which included 74 students from an educational center in Spain. Sociodemographic characteristics, energy drink consumption, social network usage, nutritional status, and adherence to the Mediterranean diet were evaluated.

The results show that 24.3% of adolescents consume energy drinks at least once a week. This consumption was higher among those studying Professional Training, not following a Mediterranean diet, or using series and movie platforms daily. 23% of students showed a risk of compulsive internet use, and 28.4% had an unhealthy weight.

The consumption of energy drinks is frequent among adolescents, so it seems necessary to take measures aimed at increasing awareness of the risks of consuming such drinks in this population group. These results can help in the design and improvement of strategies to prevent the intake of unhealthy foods, especially energy drinks, in teenagers.
