Impact on anxiety/depression after an educational nursing intervention in cardiac surgery patients

Introduction. When a patient is going to undergo a surgical intervention, a series of reactions / manifestations generated such as anxiety, depression, stress... in response to a new and unknown situation. In the case of cardiac surgery, these reactions / manifestations can be exacerbated as a consequence of the magnitude of the intervention and maintained during the immediate postoperative period and once in the hospital ward.
Objective. The main objective is to know if an educative nursing intervention in the preoperative period (simultaneously with the patient and the main caregiver) contributes to reduce the Anxiety / Depression levels in the postoperative period in the hospitalization ward.
Methodology. For this purpose, a pilot study of Cuasiexperimental methodology is presented, which compares the Anxiety and Depression levels measured by the HADS Scale in two independent groups (experimental and control) before and after surgery. A total of 28 patients were analyzed, 14 in each group.
Results. Highlights the finding of moderately elevated levels of Depression compared to practically no Anxiety before surgery. The Anxiety / Depression Levels decrease in both groups but starting from the most significant percentages of Anxiety / Depression before surgery in the Experimental Group.
Conclusions. Anxiety / Depression levels decrease in both groups but it is necessary to continue with this study until the sample size calculated to obtain more significant results. The presence of Depression in both groups suggests going deeper into a study outside the Anxiety Level to analyze the factors that make it up before and after cardiac surgery.
