Abstract

Introduction. Preoperative anxiety is an unpleasant emotional state experienced by patients who are waiting to be operated on as a result of the imminent procedure. Its presence has important psychological, physiological and clinical consequences. There are effective treatments to reduce it. The reduction of the levels of preoperative anxiety is related to a better postoperative recovery, achieving greater overall patient satisfaction, less pain and postoperative nausea and vomiting, a lower consumption of anxiolytics and sedatives, even a shorter hospital stay. Informative and educational interventions carried out by nurses are promising to reduce levels of preoperative anxiety. and should be included in usual clinical practice.

Hypothesis. The information provided to patients and companions before a surgical intervention reduces the levels of preoperative anxiety in the patient.

Methodology. This is a unicentric, analytical, longitudinal, quasiexperimental study with a non concurrent, non randomized control group, comparing levels of anxiety with a structured informative intervention (experimental group) with usual clinical practice (control group).

Conclusions. There is a relationship between the information received by patients and their level of anxiety. Patients who receive the information present lowerlevels of anxiety.
