Pediatric and parental approach to lifestyles in a determinated population

Introduction. The prevalence of childhood obesity is influenced by psychological, socioeconomic and family factors, including children´s education. Parent’s influence on feeding their children brings out a critical issue considering the rapid growth of obesity in children and young people. Children depend exclusively on their parents in terms of having a healthy diet and practice physical activity.
Objective. This study aims at determining the main factors associated with the risk of overweight and obesity in children, as well as it highlights the nutritional characteristics and ways of life of both the pediatric population and their parents.
Results. Our results show that children and their parents definitely need to improve their eating habits and increase their physical activity, that is, both children and parents. Considering, with greater significance, the high amount of children who eat while using an electronic device.
Conclusions. Thus, a pediatric nurse in primary care plays an important role here in order to prevent childhood obesity, as well as being an influence on children and parents so as to improve their eating habits. Not only should we focus on the pediatric patient, but also it is essential to keep on working together with the family members, that is, the creators of those habits. Therefore, may it give a sharper focus on training and providing parents with valuable information on this issue.
